The concave board actually holds the pieces steady enough to play a real game, which surprised me since I figured it was mostly a decoration. It's been sitting on our coffee table for two weeks and everyone who comes over picks up a piece to fiddle with it.

The concave board really does keep the pieces from tipping over, even with my cat batting at them. Guests always end up poking the figures just to watch them quiver, and half the night turns into a chess game nobody planned on.

I set this out on the coffee table and it's become the thing everyone gravitates toward before dinner. The figures quiver just enough to make you think before every move, which is way more fun than the rigid set I grew up with.
