水杉最初被認為已經滅絕，僅存在於化石紀錄中，直到1941年在中國發現了活體標本。1939年，日本發現了一塊類似常綠紅杉的化石，由發現者三木茂博士命名為Metasequoia。1945年，其在中國的存在得到確認，因此被稱為「活化石」。此後，幼苗被帶到日本，如今水杉遍布全國。果實成熟變為棕色時會裂開，釋放出圓形帶翅的種子。

由京都的Usage No Nedoko所製作的Sola Cubes，體現了這種哲學。這些方塊融合了日本傳統對自然的敬畏以及對被忽略元素的欣賞。每個方塊封存著保存的葉片、種子或花朵，置於手工拋光的透明壓克力樹脂中，提供一窺自然之美的冥想視角——類似於Kuramata的「Miss Blanche」，但使用真實的有機材料。
I gave this to my brother who's obsessed with prehistoric life, and he immediately zeroed in on the dawn redwood story — that it was known only from fossils until a living one turned up in China in 1941. Wild that something thought extinct for millions of years is now sitting on his desk.
The little fossil-resin block with the dawn redwood sprig inside is way prettier in person than in the photos, and the extinct-then-rediscovered story makes it a great desk piece.
