Played this with three friends last night and the market stacks kept everyone scheming until midnight. Snatching cards from your neighbor is the mean little twist that makes it, and the rules clicked after one round.

The "pay into the market stacks" mechanic is what sold me, it forces you to watch your neighbors instead of just hoarding cards. Taught it to my parents in about five minutes and we ended up playing four rounds straight.
