The sixty-four individual pieces of this ingenious chess set stack and lock into thin metal tubes reminiscent of magic wands. Both satisfying to handle and lovely to behold, the nickel silver and gold plated pieces have an angular, modernist aesthetic that was likely influenced by the designer's friendship with Man Ray.

Cyril Endfield majored in Drama at Yale while also studying mathematics, mechanical drawing and silversmithing. He occasionally worked as a professional sleight-of-hand magician. Endfield assisted Orson Wells on Mercury Theater projects and later went on to direct several film noir classics.

Endfield created his chess set in 1972 and the International Chess Federation chose his design to commemorate the legendary championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spasski. This updated edition of Cyril Endfield's Interlocking Chess Set comes complete with a folding board and storage case.

I keep this on my coffee table and guests can't help picking up the pieces, which snap together into wand-like tubes with a really satisfying click. The nickel silver and gold finish looks way more expensive than I paid. Takes a minute to reassemble all sixty-four, but honestly that's half the fun.
