Enigma Pocket Puzzle

Category: Brainteasers

This twisted metal tangle is one of the most difficult pocket puzzles in our collection. Three swirling hooks are locked together in a complicated knot. No violent force is required to separate the pieces, only gentle twisting, a bit of sliding and a lots, and lots of careful planning. Even the great puzzle master Nob Yoshigahara originally considered this design impossible to solve. Fair warning.

First designed and patented in America in 1975 by Eldon Vaughn. Manufactured by Hanayama of Japan.

Took this on a long flight and it ate up a good hour before I even made progress. The way those three hooks interlock is genuinely deceptive—no force needed, just patience and the right twist sequence.

Carter ★★★★★

The three swirling hooks fit together so tightly that even after a week of fiddling, I still find new angles to try. It's genuinely tough without needing brute force, which is exactly what I wanted for my desk breaks.

It's rare that a puzzle actually makes me stop everything and think, but this one did for over an hour. The way those three hooks interlock is pure deception, and knowing no force is needed makes it even more infuriating in the best way. Still haven't solved it, but I'm hooked.
